DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

The Alicia Smith Lartey College of Education of the A.M.E. Zion University prepares individuals for the academic and the professional service in the educational system of the Country. It is the starting point of careers in teaching, education, administration and supervision, teachers’ education, curriculum development, library Science, educational planning and innovation, and related professional areas. The college seeks to highlight the role of education in national development.

The goal of the Alicia Smith Lartey College of Education is focused on the preparation of teachers to be:

1. Academically and professionally capable to maintain hard moral standard and total dedication to the teaching profession.
2. Knowledgeable of theories of learning.
3. Sensitive to attitudes, emotions, cultural heritage and special needs of all students.
4. Capable of promoting school-community relationship through effective communication, and equipped to face the challenges of the present and future society.
5. Cognitive of the values of pursuing long life learning through involvement in professional association, workshops/seminars, research and other professional activities.

The goals and objectives are pursued through the provision of opportunities for pre- service study in several teaching ields and in-service training in workshops/seminars, and symposium.

RESEARCH ATTRIBUTES
The Alicia Smith Lartey College of Education of the A.M.E. Zion University (AMEZU) supports research and scholar attributes to achieve the following:
1. To provide students and others the opportunity to develop and master appropriate skills in scientiic method of observation, experimentation, and analysis necessary for success in the requisite academic disciplines;
2. Enhance the academic capabilities of the faculty and visiting scholars,

DEGREE PROGRAMS
The College currently offers the Bachelor of Science degree (B.Sc.) program with preparation and competencies in the following five contents: areas :

1. Mathematics Education
2. Language Arts Education
3. Geography Education
4. Business Education
5. History Education

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
EDUC 201 INTRODUCTION TO EDUCATION CREDIT: 3 CREDITS/SEMESTER -Course designed to serve as
foundation to the different educational issues that will be discussed. Emphasis shall be placed on socio-Economic, political and Religious contributions relate to the day to life style of an individual.

EDUC - 203 EDUCATION - LIBRARY SCIENCE CREDIT: 3 CREDITS/SEMESTER-This course is designed to give students information on the functions of the school library and how it relates to the total educational program,  and also provides support for the teacher education program at the University of A.M.E. Zion relative to materials for  institution.

EDUC 206 - HEALTH EDUCATION CREDIT: 3 CREDIT/SEMESTER-This course is designed to enable trainers in their physical, social and emotional development as they prepare for adulthood, marriage, parenthood, ageing as well as their relationships within the social cultural context of the family and society.Strong emphasis will be place on sexually transmitted diseases, HIV/AIDS in Liberia some wonders of the human body, becoming safety-minded, learning about teeth and inding out about other diseases, deined, state reasons, explain the values of irst - Aid and indicate general directions for giving irst Aid.

EDUC - 211: EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY CREDIT: 3 CREDITS/SEMESTER-PRE-REQUISITE: JUNIOR STANDING &
COMPLETION OF ENGLISH-A comprehensive course which introduces the student to the general ield of psychology and the study of those phases of child and adolescent development which are useful in the school. Emphasis is placed on the problems of educational psychology and the application of the laws of psychology of the teaching and learning process.

EDUC 300 EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY CREDIT: 3 CREDITS/SEMESTER - Course designed to give wide range of insights into how people of different nations, tribes and nationalities of the world look and reason about educational settings in their respective areas or lands. Emphasis will be made on the values and importance of western and cultural education.

EDUC 301 CURRICULUM PRINCIPLES, TRENDS, & LESSON PLANNING CREDIT: 3 CREDITS/SEMESTER -This course
will provide a clear understanding on what is a curriculum? How to use a curriculum, its relative signiicance to the teacher, student and school setting. Emphasis will be drawn on the different levels and basic techniques on how to use the curriculum and its components. Also, it provides the teacher the understanding of a lesson plan, scheme of work and the analysis of the curriculum interns of its contents as it relates to teaching.

EDUC - 302 SPECIAL WORKSHOPS IN TESTS AND MEASUREMENTS FOR THE CLASSROOM TEACHERS CREDIT:   3
CREDITS/SEMESTER-A practical experience in construction of teacher made tests and in use of standardized testing material. Pre-Requisite:Sopomore Standing.

EDUC - 303 INSTRUCTIONAL AIDS/ MEDIA EDUCATION- CREDIT: - 3 CREDITS/SEMESTER-Pre-requisite: Junior
Standing and completion of English. This course is designed to prepare students in training for the task of cooperation and collaboration through communication skills using both verbal and non verbal approaches. It enables the trainers to prepare instructional aids for every topic he/she teachers in the classroom.

PRE-REQUISITE: SOPHOMORE STANDING EDUC-306 SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION CREDIT: 3 CREDITS/SEMESTER-
Pre-Requisite: Junior standing and completion of English-This course is designed to prepare students for the task of directing and managing elementary and secondary schools. It gives particular attention to the administrative aspects of Liberian Schools. It has the further aim of providing students with skills, knowledge and understandings to attack the problem or school relationships, community organization problems, and pupil achievement.

EDUC 308 PRIMARY & SECONDARY EDUCATION METHODS CREDIT: 3 CREDITS/SEMESTER-This course is designed
for teachers pursuing primary & secondary level teacher education program with emphasis on the different kinds of instructional methods to be applied at a particular designed level of the primary & secondary level. It enables teachers understand how to teach at every levels and the relevant and appropriate methods that will stimulate teaching conditions in the classroom. PRE-REQUISITE SENIOR STANDING AND COMPLETION OF ENGLISH

EDUC 400 CLASSROOM ORGANIZATION AND MANAGEMENT -CREDIT: 3 CREDITS/SEMESTER-Pre - Requisite:
Consent of the Instructor-This course is designed to prepare students in training for the task of directing and managing the classroom so that effective learning can take place, thus reducing behavior problems. The course provides for the students in training a clear understand of some ways of studying students and their roles as a teacher in the classroom.

EDUC - 404 SEMINAR ON LIBERIAN EDUCATION CREDIT: 3 CREDITS/SEMESTER- A foundation course in which the development of Western education in Liberia is related to historical, cultural and social factors, cognizance will be taken of the influence of the unique indigenous system of the education - the “bush” school in Liberian setting.

EDUC 411 GUIDANCE PRE-REQUISITE: CONSENT OF THE INSTRUCTOR CREDIT: 3 CREDITS/SEMESTER-A study of
the Social, Psychological, Economic and Philosophic trends which led to the development of guidance programs in schools. Courses and uses of educational, occupational and related information in guidance.

EDUC 413 EDUCATIONAL PLANNING CREDIT: 3 CREDITS/SEMESTER-A course designed to give wide range of insights into how, when and why to signiicantly plan for educational activities that will sustain an appropriate academic climate.

EDUC 444 PRACTICE TEACHING CREDIT: 3 CREDITS/SEMESTER-This course is practically conducted where the senior student major is assigned to teach in a school for one semester to ensure all the principles and theories are practice and demonstrated before a student is recommend for graduation. EDUC 445 COMPARATIVE EDUCATION CREDIT: 3 CREDITS/SEMESTER-This course is designed to enable student majoring in education to have wide range of how education is practiced all over the world; strong emphasis will be placed on issues related to instructional materials, organizational climate and general operational setting of educational  institutions.
